Reflective Baking Through Holy Week

Hi, I'm Rebekah Hays Estera. I'm a postulant preparing for the vocational diaconate from SEA Episcopal and completing my Mentored Experiential Learning (sometimes called Field Education) at Holy Child & Saint Martin.

Baking is a spiritual practice for me. I love that at the center of our Sunday liturgy, we share a simple meal of bread and wine. I have set the Table with you, and passed out bread to the community with you. I've shared bread with you at coffee hour and even baked with a few of you. I'm looking forward to spending more time baking together this week.

In her book, Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God, Laura Winner asks "If God calls Godself the Bread of Life, what kind of bread is God?" I found this question so evocative when I first read it and revisit it often. Each bake this week will help us draw a little closer to the many characteristics of God. So keep that in mind as you sprinkle out flour or roll out dough this week.

Join me everyday from Palm Sunday through Easter, for a bake and meditation. I'll be posting daily recipes and reflections on the HCSM Facebook page. And we'll bake together in person at HCSM about half of the days (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday). I hope you share pictures and your thoughts if you bake along!
